"Above the Horizon" - Derek H.

In his words of his exemplary winning composition - "This project includes myself playing every instrument except for drums, which I used digital a drum pad to record. I played the rhythm guitar, lead guitar, harmony guitar, and bass. There are no vocals on this track, for I wanted the guitar to be the melody and stick in the listeners ears. The signature sound in this song is the "organ" which I made by recording myself playing the trumpet. Then, I quick sampled the audio in Logic Pro, and added a TON of special effects onto it, including reverb, distortion, phaser, and more. In total, I had 10 effects on the trumpet, and that is what gave it the organ-esque sound. I also did this with an instrument called a thunder tube, where a member of my class recorded it, and I sampled it ad added effects. This is seen in the very beginning of the piece. It added a layer of mystery to the already mystical intro. My guitar playing on this song can always be better, but after 19 takes of one run, it seemed a little redundant to keep recording, so I figured the best take was good (for now). overall, this song took a lot of work and dedication, but it has all come together into a work that I can be proud of. This song was inspired by none other than THE Yngwie Malmsteen, a Swedish shred guitarist who incorporates classical progressions into classic metal music. This work made me become more aware of the chords I am using and the notes I'm playing on the guitar. The combination of organ/harpsichord is something Yngwie does in lots of his music, and I really thought I could make something inspired by it. It's taken a LONG time, but I finally have my final draft of this song and I really think that it captured the essence of classical music and metal. After all, metal is just classical music + electricity. Overall, I feel good about this song and the way it incorporates many different styles of music and gives inspiration to combining genres."

"River" - Croix S.

In his words on his exemplary nominated composition - "The name of this song is River because just like a river the ideas and style changes like bends in a river. Just because a river starts somewhere it doesn't necessary end there too. This song was an assignment for my school's music production 2 class, the quick sampler project. Like the name entails, we had to use the quick sampler feature in Logic with audios that students in the class made. We had everything from bass clarinet to thunder tubes. In my project I used handbells, bass drum hits, bass drum rolls, and thunder tube rumbles to transition between sections. The first part of the song is a more classical, concerto like solo from french horn and then traditions to flute just before the big beat switch into a more techno style and stays there for the rest of the song. I composed the classical section myself along with all of the quick sampled instruments, but almost everything else are loops that I found within Logic that I adjusted by applying plug-ins to make them more stylistically different and unique. Nothing was recorded live, but instead they were logic instruments or loops. I hope that you enjoy River!"

"Moon" - Carlos H

In his own words for his exemplary-nominated composition - "This song I made was for a project in my music production class. It was called a historic remix project. I had to take a speech that was in the public domain or not under copyright and add music to it to remix the speech to be something new. I used the JFK speech of why we choose to go to the moon which is not copyrighted since it's a presidential speech and those are not copyrighted and are in public domain. I also used the apollo moon landing which is in public domain too. I used a royalty free beat from looperman.com and then used the stem splitter on logic pro to use the bass line and melody at different times with the vocal clips. I made the effect of reverse reverb which was really hard to edit. Other than the loop, I created the drum beats and the 808 bass lines. I also quick sampled some of the speech clips which was hard too. I hope you like my project."

"The Place You Called Home" - Colin M

In Colin's Words of his exemplary award nominated composition - "I just took my first ever music production class this year, and it was a TON of fun. As someone very into the live performance aspect of music, this was a very different, yet refreshing, approach to music. The Place You Called Home was my final project that I created at the end of my semester long music production class, and was my most complex project by a long shot. Throughout the entirety of my music production class, I also told myself that I would try to not use any loops, and instead would try to create my own "loops". This project followed that trend, and has no loops in it. Especially in the beginning, I really played around with the different instrument's fading in and out of the texture to make it feel like every time you listen to it, you notice something new. I also set myself the challenge of incorporating a super light and floaty style, with a way heavier style, which I pulled off with mediocre success. I'm not expecting to get any award for this piece, but would love feedback about next steps to become even better at this now hobby of mine! Overall, considering how I've only spent a few months using Logic Pro for about 3ish times a week, I'm very happy with how it turned out, and it was a ton of fun to make."

"What I Remember" - Vaughn K

In Vaughn's words - "This song is based off a melody that I have had in my head since before I started music production. When the second semester of music production started, we were tasked with creating a song based off of the skills we learned in the beginning of the year. Once I put the notes down on the piano roll, I immediately knew that this song was going to be an earworm. I wanted to create a soundscape that complimented the progression of the song, so I chose an EDM-inspired sound with large synths and arpeggiators in the background, with a key change in the beginning to keep the song interesting. Regarding the mixing and mastering, I was still experimenting with EQ and mastering, which could explain why some harsher frequencies bleed through the mix. But overall, this is the catchiest song I have produced, with my best use of electronic sounds and synths."
